  1. 01.The Company


    The company produces motorcycles and racing motorcycles and the prestigious make known throughout the world for its great successes in the world of sport.

    It is not just a mechanical engineering company in the traditional sense but a genuine community of fans, employees and motorcycle owners throughout the world that breaks through every barrier.

    Product quality, which has to satisfy the high expectations of so many fans, is pursued in the company with the same meticulous attention.

  2. 02.The requirement


    The requirement is to assess the possibility of substituting the liquid paint cycle on the welded metal parts of the vehicles with a paint cycle that is more reliable from an operative viewpoint and with an improvement in its qualitative performance. At the same time a lower product cost is required.

    In particular the visible part of the motorcycle frame, which is one of the symbolic features of the manufacturer, requires a high level of performance in both its technological and aesthetic aspects.

    The new paint cycle and the current cycle must be interchangeable and superimposable without any difference in appearance of any kind being noticeable.

    It was decided to change from a liquid cycle to a powder coating, bearing in mind the difficulties connected with the use of metallised finishes which must allow a perfect reproducibility of colour, constancy in application and resistance to light.

    The quality levels that distinguish the make do not permit any compromise in technical or aesthetic aspects.

  3. 03.The method


    The project involved the company technical experts, the quality service and the outsourcing managers in addition to the technical-sales service and the laboratory technicians of Inver.

    All the technical requirements of the frame and the specifications were examined.

    It was decided that besides all the technical tests to be carried out urgently, road tests should be done for an adequate period.

    The laboratory tests had to produce results not only complying with the technical paint specifications but comparisons had to be made directly with the current liquid cycle and its already well-known guaranteed performance.

    the stages of the project were determined as follows:

    1) Analysis and choice of the paint products

    2) Technical tests on samples and detailed aspects of paint production including:

    - Adhesion
    - Corrosion
    - Resistance to solvents
    - surface hardness
    - Thermal shock
    - Ageing
    - Brillance, thickness, covering properties.
    - Capacity for overpainting, marking, ease of polishing, staying power of adhesives, verification of tightening torques.

    3) Pilot painting lots of finished articles

    - Carried out at the plants of the external supplier.

    4) Examination of behaviour in operating conditions

    - Road tests on various vehicles with mileage of at least 24,000 km

    5) Final analysis of the results

  4. 04.The results


    The required results were completely achieved with great success.

    - All the resistance tests were passed with values better than those of the technical specifications and a substantial improvement was made over the liquid product cycle especially in regard to resistance to light (brilliance and colour), resistance to solvents, surface hardness and resistance to marking.

    - No defects were found in the vehicles subjected to road tests.

    - In addition to the qualitative performance there was a considerable reduction in discards due to the greater reliability of the process.

    - The constancy in quality of the metalized products, due to the bonding process, ensured uniformity of the colour during application and perfect reproducibility of the colour shade.

    - Moreover, in the assembly process there was a considerable reduction in defects (related to scratches, tightening torques and polishability) due to to assembly operations.

    - After a painstaking process of industrialisation the cost of painting the article was reduced considerably and much lower than the most optimistic estimates.
